Understanding the “Show Me, Tell Me” section is a vital part of passing your HGV driving test. This part of the exam focuses on safety checks and practical knowledge, and answering incorrectly can result in a driving fault. To help you prepare, we’ve compiled a fully updated and easy-to-follow guide to all the official DVSA questions and model answers.

Ensure all doors are properly closed and locking levers on cargo doors are in the recommended secured position.

Build up air pressure, check the gauges for any pressure drop, and listen around the vehicle for audible air leaks.

Ensure the load is evenly distributed, within legal weight limits, and securely fastened to prevent movement or falling.

Make sure all reflectors are present, clean, and not cracked or broken.

They should be clean, free of damage, and not obstructed by stickers or objects.

During your daily walk-around, confirm that all mudguards and spray suppression devices are secure and undamaged.

Use a pressure gauge when tyres are cold, check for 1mm tread across ¾ of the tyre, and inspect for cuts or exposed cords.

Operate them to ensure they work and inspect the blades for wear or damage.

Check the bodywork for loose panels, secure fittings, and ensure nothing poses a risk to road users.

Look at the pressure gauges and ensure they read correctly, with no warnings or alarms.

Locate the dipstick, remove and clean it, then reinsert to check oil is between minimum and maximum markers.

Look for missing nuts, signs of loosening, or misaligned wheel nut indicators (if fitted).

Operate the horn and, if fitted, the reversing alarm to confirm they work.

Visually inspect for damaged or sagging components during your daily checks.

Press the brake pedal and use reflections or ask someone to confirm the lights work.

Check the header tank or radiator and ensure the coolant is between the marked levels.

Turn on lights and walk around the vehicle to ensure all are working correctly.

Demonstrate disc replacement. If using digital, explain card usage and function.

2.19 – Tell me how to operate the loading mechanism.Briefly explain the safe operation of equipment like a tail lift or ramp, if fitted.

With engine off, apply pressure to the steering wheel. Start engine – wheel should move slightly. Or, check ease of steering on move-off.

Activate indicators or hazards and walk around the vehicle to confirm operation.

Point to the reservoir and explain how to visually confirm fluid level.

Ensure gauges function properly and no warning lights remain on after starting.

Point out location if carried. If not, explain when it must legally be present (e.g. certain load types).

Operate the washer and wiper control. Turn ignition on if necessary.

Adjust controls to direct airflow to screen, increase fan speed, and select heated screen if available.

Turn on lights and fog light switch, confirm warning light is on. Explain use in visibility below 100 metres.

Turn on dipped headlights, then operate switch for main beam. Check warning light is illuminated.
