Once you have passed your HGV Class 1 training, you will be qualified to drive articulated lorries, drawbar combinations and other larger vehicle and trailer setups used across the haulage and logistics industry. That makes Class 1 (Cat C+E) training one of the best ways to improve your earning potential, widen the type of driving work you can apply for, and take a real step forward in your career. If you are looking for a clear, supported route into better opportunities on the road, this is where it starts.
What is a Class 1 (Cat C+E) licence?
A Class 1 licence, also called Category C+E or Cat CE, is the HGV licence that allows you to drive a Category C vehicle with a trailer over 750kg. In simple terms, this is the licence category used for articulated lorries and other large vehicle-and-trailer combinations. GOV.UK defines CE as category C vehicles with a trailer over 750kg, which is why it is the licence most people need if they want to drive articulated HGVs professionally.
For many drivers, HGV Class 1 training is the step that opens the door to more driving opportunities and higher earning potential. It is often seen as the top mainstream HGV category for goods transport, because it allows drivers to move into bigger vehicles and a wider range of logistics, haulage, trunking and long-distance work.
What vehicles can you drive with a Class 1 licence?
With a Class 1 (Cat C+E) licence, you can drive a Category C vehicle with a trailer over 750kg. In practical terms, that includes articulated lorries, drawbar combinations, many curtain-sided trailer units, supermarket trailers, tanker combinations, container units, and a wide range of larger commercial vehicle-and-trailer setups used across the haulage industry. GOV.UK’s category guidance is clear that CE is the licence category for category C vehicles with larger trailers attached.
That is why Class 1 HGV training is so valuable. It does not just upgrade your licence on paper — it qualifies you for the types of vehicles most commonly used in major freight, long-distance transport, pallet distribution, general haulage, refrigerated transport, tanker work, container work and trunking. For drivers looking to widen the types of work they can apply for, this is a major step up from lower licence categories.
What jobs require a Class 1 (Cat C+E) licence?
A Class 1 (Cat C+E) licence is commonly required for roles involving articulated lorries and other large trailer combinations. That includes many jobs in national haulage, supermarket distribution, container transport, tanker driving, refrigerated transport, pallet network work, trunking, general freight and long-distance logistics. Because Cat C+E covers the largest mainstream goods vehicle combinations, it is often the licence employers want when the role involves high-volume freight movement or more specialist HGV work.
This is one of the main reasons drivers move into HGV Class 1 training after holding a lower category or starting their HGV journey. A Class 1 licence can improve employability, open up better-paid routes, and make you eligible for jobs that would not be available on a Class 2-only licence. If driving is going to be the main part of your job, GOV.UK also says you must have the full Driver CPC to drive an HGV professionally, which is another reason the full qualification route matters.
Do I need a medical for Class 1 training?
In most cases, yes. GOV.UK states that all initial Group 2 licence applications require a medical assessment by a registered medical practitioner, recorded on the D4 form. Group 2 is the higher medical standard that applies to lorry and bus categories, including Class 1 (Cat C+E).
That means if you are applying for provisional entitlement for Class 1 or starting the higher-category route for the first time, a medical is normally part of the process. It is a standard step, not something unusual, and it is there because larger commercial vehicles are held to higher medical standards than an ordinary car licence. GOV.UK’s medical guidance also notes that Group 2 licences have further renewal requirements later on, including repeat medical assessment from age 45 onwards
What is included with your Class 1 training courses?
A proper Class 1 (Cat C+E) training route usually includes more than just time behind the wheel. Depending on the package and where you are in the process, it can include help with provisional entitlement, your medical, theory test preparation, practical driver training, and support with the tests required to qualify. GOV.UK explains that becoming a qualified HGV driver involves a combination of provisional entitlement, theory testing, practical testing and Driver CPC if you are driving professionally.
The practical part of HGV Class 1 training is where you learn how to handle articulated vehicles safely and confidently. That means understanding turning, reversing, trailer awareness, vehicle positioning, road use and overall control of a larger unit and trailer combination. A good course should not just aim to get you through the test — it should prepare you for real Class 1 driving work afterwards too. That is especially important because Cat C+E is the licence category linked to some of the largest and most demanding mainstream goods vehicles on UK roads.
Do I need to pass a theory test before I can do Class 1 training?
You normally need to pass the relevant theory test before you can move into the final practical test stage. GOV.UK says you can book the Driver CPC part 1 theory test as soon as you have your provisional licence, and that it consists of multiple choice and hazard perception, both of which must be passed within two years of each other to get your theory test certificate. GOV.UK also says you must have passed the part 1 theory test before you can book the part 3b on-road driving test in the Driver CPC route.
In practical terms, that means theory is a key step in the Class 1 route. Some providers will help you organise and prepare for it as part of the wider training process, while others may leave more of it to you. Either way, if you are serious about Class 1 HGV training, it helps to treat the theory stage properly rather than seeing it as a box-ticking exercise. It is one of the foundations of the full licence route.
Do I need Driver CPC with a Class 1 licence?
If you want to drive an HGV professionally as the main part of your job, yes, in most cases you will need the full Driver CPC. GOV.UK says that to become a qualified HGV or bus driver, you must get the professional driving qualification called the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), and that if you drive a lorry professionally you must have the full Driver CPC.
Once qualified, GOV.UK also says you must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to keep your Driver CPC and continue driving professionally. If you drive professionally without the correct CPC, there can be penalties. So while the Class 1 licence gives you the vehicle entitlement, the Driver CPC is what keeps you compliant for paid professional driving work.
What happens if I fail my Class 1 test?
Failing a Class 1 test does not mean the process is over. It simply means you will need to rebook and return better prepared for the next attempt. The right next step depends on why the test was not passed. Some drivers only need a little extra training to correct one or two issues, while others benefit from a slightly longer reset before going back to test. The important thing is to treat the result as feedback, not the finish line. This is especially important with Class 1 (Cat C+E) training, because articulated vehicles take time to get used to and many learners need that bit of extra support.
A good training provider should help you understand what went wrong and what to do next, rather than leaving you to figure it out on your own. Passing first time is always the goal, but the bigger goal is becoming a safe, confident and employable Class 1 driver. Sometimes an extra lesson or a retest is simply part of that journey.
