Can You Go Straight to Class 1 Without Doing Class 2 First?

One of the most common questions we get is simple: do you have to do Class 2 before Class 1?

The short answer — no, you don’t. Thanks to changes in UK licensing rules, you can now go straight to a Class 1 (Category C+E) licence without completing Class 2 first.

But just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. Here’s what you need to know before deciding your route.

What Changed in the UK HGV Licence Rules?

Previously, drivers had to follow a staged process:

  • Pass Category C (Class 2)
  • Then upgrade to Category C+E (Class 1)

Now, that requirement has been removed. You can go directly from a standard car licence to Class 1 (Category C+E) training.

This has made the process faster and more flexible, especially for new drivers entering the industry.

What Is a Class 1 Licence?

A Class 1 licence allows you to drive the largest and most advanced HGV vehicles, including:

  • Articulated lorries (artics)
  • Drawbar vehicles
  • Heavy goods combinations with trailers

It’s the highest level of HGV driving licence and often leads to higher-paying roles.

Can Beginners Go Straight to Class 1?

Yes — even if you have no previous HGV experience, you can go straight into Class 1 training.

Your route would usually look like this:

  1. Apply for your provisional HGV licence
  2. Pass your theory and hazard perception tests
  3. Complete practical training
  4. Pass your Module 3a and 3b driving tests

You can start this journey through our HGV driver training programmes.

Should You Skip Class 2?

This is where it gets more interesting.

While going straight to Class 1 is quicker, some drivers still choose to start with Class 2 (Category C) first.

Going straight to Class 1 makes sense if:

  • You want to reach higher-paying roles faster
  • You’re confident learning larger vehicles straight away
  • You want to avoid doing two separate courses

Starting with Class 2 may suit you if:

  • You prefer a step-by-step learning approach
  • You want experience with rigid vehicles first
  • You’re nervous about jumping straight into articulated lorries

Is Class 1 Training More Difficult?

Class 1 vehicles are larger and involve reversing with a trailer, which adds complexity. However, with the right training, many complete beginners pass first time.

The key difference is not difficulty — it’s confidence and experience.

With proper instruction, structured training, and enough time behind the wheel, going straight to Class 1 is completely achievable.

Will Employers Accept Direct Class 1 Drivers?

Yes — many employers are happy to take on newly qualified Class 1 drivers, especially with the ongoing demand for HGV drivers across the UK.

However, some roles may still prefer experience, so it’s important to:

  • Be flexible with your first job
  • Consider agency or entry-level roles
  • Build confidence quickly once qualified

Do You Still Need Driver CPC?

Yes — if you plan to drive professionally, you’ll still need to complete your Driver CPC.

This usually includes:

  • CPC Module 2 (case studies)
  • CPC Module 4 (practical demonstration)

You can learn more about this through our CPC Module 4 training page.

Is Going Straight to Class 1 the Best Option?

For many drivers, yes — it’s faster, more direct, and gets you into top-level driving roles sooner.

But the right choice depends on you. Your confidence, your learning style, and your long-term goals all matter.

The good news? You’ve got options — and both routes can lead to a successful HGV career.
