Show Me, Tell Me Questions for PCV Drivers
Passing your PCV practical test requires not only road driving but also a clear demonstration of vehicle safety checks. The “Show Me, Tell Me” segment tests your ability to carry out key pre-drive checks safely. To help you prepare, we’ve compiled the latest DVSA-style questions and model answers tailored to PCV responsibilities.
Tell me how you’d check the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Press the brake pedal – it should feel firm and not go to the floor. After moving off, gently brake to check the vehicle stops correctly without pulling to one side.
Tell me where you’d find the tyre pressure information and how you’d check it.
It’s found in the manufacturer’s manual or door jamb plate. Use a pressure gauge on cold tyres, and inflate or deflate to the recommended PSI.
Tell me how you’d check the headlights, sidelights, and tail lights are working.
Turn them on, step out and visually ensure each lamp illuminates.
Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are operating.
Activate the indicators or hazard lights, then walk around the vehicle to confirm they’re flashing correctly.
Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with the ABS.
A warning light showing on the dashboard indicates a fault with the anti-lock braking system.
When it’s safe, show me how to wash and clean the rear windscreen.
Demonstrate pulling the control stalk to use the washer and wiping the screen while maintaining control of the vehicle and checking surroundings.
When it’s safe, show me how to wash and clean the front windscreen.
Operate the front washer/wiper controls, use quick eye contact to locate the controls, and ensure safe vehicle control.
